LUNAR ECLIPSE ON POSON POYA DAY
June 15, 2011 : Sri Lankans will get the opportunity to witness a total Lunar Eclipse on Poson Poya day.
The Secretary of the Sri Lanka Astronomical Association, Dr. Kaavan Ranatunga speaking to Newsfirst stated that this will be the first total lunar eclipse visible from Sri Lanka for this year.
Sri Lankans will be able to witness the lunar eclipse starting from 11.53 p.m on June 15 until 2.33 a.m June 16.
Dr. Ranatunga noted that this will be a significantly long eclipse which will last over 100 minutes.
The longest time a total eclipse has lasted for stands at 107 minutes.
The Secretary of the Sri Lanka Astronomical Association added that the last time Sri Lankans witnessed a long eclipse of this nature was in the year 1971.
